Another old collection and another questionable group of stamps. This time Persia which seems to be notorious for forgeries and reprints and forgeries of forgeries. Thus I am pretty sure these 6 stamps are forgeries but I am curious about how to differentiate them from the real deal. I have looked at a number of websites for information but haven't found anything definitive. Any help is appreciated. Even if real these issues aren't incredibly valuable but I won't sell them unless I know what they are. Sc 280-285 but are they real? Thanks!

Sorry I can't help you answer your question, but ironically logged on to ask about Persian/Iranian forgeries. Anyone have a good reference site?

If you want to collect Peris/Iran, the Persiphila catalogues are an absolute must. Expensive for the entire set, but well worth it:

Persiphilia also has some info about forgeries online:

I have the first edition, 2002, of the Persiphila Standard Philatelic Catalogue and I agree as to its high value in working with old Persian issues. I bought it at the end of 2007.

I had a clipping from my files that I added to the catalogue, from the American Philatelist in February, 1983, called "Pitfalls of Iranian Philately." Author was A. John Ultee. Did a quick re-check and it's quite good. Those who are members should be able to get a copy from the APRL (American Philatelic Research Library).

I spent some time on the Persiphilia website. It wasn't much help with these. I might try the APRL and see if I can get some other reference material. I was hoping to avoid anything costly.

The story I was told many years ago for these and other cheap forgeries was that collectors were asking for them from the stamp dealers and a lot of these cheap forgeries were made at the request of the dealers to have something to sell .

You are going to ask ,why were these request so popular . Simple the early makers of stamp albums in the 1900's to 1920's had a poor understanding as to what was common and what was hard to get or even rare . They put drawings in these albums with spaces to be filled . So collectors were asking for them before everyone realized these stamp in real life were hard to find . So the dealers got copies made and sold them to satisfy demand .

Thank you -- I found that site as well. It doesn't really address 280-285 :(

I will keep looking. Thank you all.

I am not an expert by any means, but I believe that your stamps are not the real deal. They look exactly like the ones I have, printed on that thin brownish paper. I showed mine to a local stamp guy and he told me mine were forgeries.

ehall928_ your stamps are type II(Scott). The overprint types can be dtermined with the pic below. The main ones being I & II.
There are also the positions in the vertical block of 12.(2 x 6)
In your stamps (the first 2 are not clear).3) pos. 2,4) pos.4,5) pos.2, 6)pos.2.
These stamps should fit into one of the 12 positions. That being said; it can be also a reprint.
Stamp 3 looks nice to me..

The general theme I see here is that used stamps with cancels not typical of corner CDS's or CTO's are your best bet in collecting Persia and you really need to know your stuff with unused examples.

The Persiphila catalog has four pages for these issues with another page on the base stamp under the control mark. I assume APRL has copies of the catalog which would be a bi help for you. In general just assume any you find are forgeries and set them aside for more detailed examination once you have access to good references.
