Help please - I have searched here and on Google as well as Scott classic looking for a listing of all plate numbers for all GB by Scott number.
This one in particular is a Scott 82 with a plate number 20 that I do not see listed so do I either have the wrong Scott number or should I get ready to place my order for a new Bentley?

Thanks Rod. I actually have a SG catalog that is due to be delivered any day. Will that have a good plate number reference?

Absolutely Wheelman,
Page 29 Stanley Gibbons Concise 2012 Catalogue

SG Type 41
SG#142 Plates 17,18.19 and 20

PS: I am unable to decipher SG sometimes, "Watermark Inverted" commands a healthy price rise, not sure if that relates to the 4 plates

Scan is a bit Dodgy, PERFIN looks like RE/&co
not in my database, but listed as #161 (unnamed) in GB Perfins (Jennings).

PPS: Lovely Pmk strike. Not sure if the code at top is AF ? Afternoon, or Time code letters.

Hi Rod,

Yes, I would read the price for SG 142Wi to refer to a stamp from any of the four plates.

I believe SG 142 = Scott #68.

Wheelman,
Can you please submit a better scan of the back of the stamp for the PERFIN please?

Caveat: I am a learner driver.

It appears you may have an undiscovered PERFIN on the 2.5d Blue Plate 20
To date my records show only 179 differing PERFIN punctures, not including your RP (If that is correct)

If so, I'd like your approval to submit it to the Perfin Society
for judgement, and or inclusion in an updated list.

Nice to see Plate 17 in both colours, Rosy Mauve and Blue
(The only plate to do so)
5000 sheets Rosy Mauve
30,000 sheets in Blue.

Just 2 PERFIN DIES can be found on all 23 Plates

If varieties exist that fall under a number, the price quoted by the concise tends to refer to the cheapest.

Specialised Vol 1, 12th ed. (2001), so a little older

SG142wi = J19a (plate 17) to J22a (plate 20)

Prices
J19a (plate 17) £ 60 used
J20a (Plate 18) £ 75 used
J21a (Plate 19) £ 45 used
J22a (plate 20) £ 45 used

I agree. That specialised specifies when they were put to press

Plate 17: 1880 (this must have been before February 5th, 1880)
Plate 18: February 11th, 1880
Plate 19: April 6th, 1880
Plate 20 (actually it says plate 22 under J22, but that is given as September 6th, 1881 under J23): October 11th, 1880.

Put to press: issued after that. Whereas the Specialised (2001) only gives 1880, it must have been put to press on or before February 5th, 1880. Otherwise, it could not have been issued on February 5th. And there is a good chance they did not issue on the same day they started printing.

Actually, SG does something strange here. Unless this was another plate than that used for the rosy mauve printing, it was put to press before the rosy mauve was issued. Thus, 1880 refers to first used for printing the blue stamp. The actual date for the plate (17) having been put to press for the rosy mauve stamp is given as December 23rd, 1879.

Yes indeed. I wonder if this could be R.B/Co. which is known as a perfin on plates 22 and 23?

I don't have access to the Gault catalogue and don't know what this die looks like.

Thanks for the help guys. Here is a better scan of front and back. BTW - Rookie error, I believed the number on the glassine. It is a perf 14, WM 29, Scott 68 ergo the Plate 20.
