"The Serrane Guide" has more than two pages discussing the originals, the reprints, and the numerous forgeries/counterfeits of this issue. Don't hold your breath hoping this is an original. |

I'll have a look, thank you! If it is (got it from a 90 year old relation) I might be lucky! R |

It seems to match all of the genuine attributes, where do I go to get it verified? |

How were these printed? In a forme of dies, all differing impressions? As a novice, I see lots of differing points, to the genuine. Esp the "1" the adjacent dot or period, and the spacing.

Richard - the lettering on your copy looks quite different to your signposted one to me - look at the bottom line in particular. |

Kicking Tyres.... Typography Do you see any indentations on the back from the die?
Watermarks Sc# 185 and 184 do not match those lines (elipses or rows of crowns.)
Is the paper toned bluish or Grey?
Proofs are known on white porous paper.
The scan is poor, for close inspection, can you count the dots around the shield?

I agree with GeoffHa that the letters look different. An example is the second L in FRANCOBOLLO. As I am not familiar with the issue, I could not say whether letters differ for different positions.
I also see marked differences in the inner vertical framelines that extend onto the horizontal outer framelines. It could be due to over-inking. |

I find the impression overinked as well. To be frank, all the indications of a genuine stamp seem to fit, from the knowledge I have seen /read.
The watermark is the only negative for mine, I have witnessed another stamp on the internet with these two lines.

Nice collection Richard. All new territory for me, nonetheless, interesting. If it were me, Id be investing in a scanner (Epson) and perhaps sending that off for a cert. The advantages of a scanner is not to be underestimated, one can get up close and personal, "toggle" stamp images to see flaws and forgeries. An integral piece of the stamp collectors toolkit. The crowns in the one watermark are separated by 5 rows of lines. Certainly worth investigating your collection further! |
