Hi, this stamp fascinates me for some reason. It seems a Washington from 1912. According to stampworld, of from 1912 these stamps should be perf 12x12, or imperf, or HOR 8,5, or VER 8,5. If from 1914, it is 10x10, 12x10 or 10x12. The latter two are the high valued stamps.

Now what do I have? We have a perf VER 10. Measuring width suggests some stretch. I also notice some greenish plate tone, suggesting rotary press. I seem to have quite some detail, suggesting intalgo press. This is all mentioned in http://www.jamesdire.net/W-F.html.

So; VER 10, rotary intalgo. What's the worth?

www.stampsmarter.com will tell you exactly what you need to know.
This is one of the most complicated series so following the guidance of that website. Again, measuring the stamp will not get you anywhere but in trouble. Go here: https://www.stampsmarter.org/1847us...ankmain.html

I'm learning as I go, so experts correct me if I'm wrong, but based on just the VER 10, it is 443, 452, or 490. If you are confident it is rotary, then 452 or 490. 452 is watermarked and 490 is not. You can search ebay sold values for those stamps to get an idea of value.

Bloemzee,
The references you are using aren't getting you all the information they should.
You should find Scott 443, 452, and 490 as perf 10 vertical coil stamps. Yours will be one of these.

Captaincoffee and I were typing at the same time!

I would add, your stamp passed through a vending machine, note the row of short vertical indentations across the top of Washington's head. Likely someone put a nickel in a vending machine, turned the crank and had a strip of 5 stamps ejected. The gearing made the row of indentations. The the strip was cut off the roll by a knife apparatus, which explains the straight edge at the right which just missed the row of perforations.

That is so cool, I would have completely missed that.
Being knowledgeable on the issue, I guess you would have been looking for them, by the seeing first the separation on the RHS.

I'll be looking out for them in the future.

Stamp Smarter for sure is your friend - I used it quite a bit with mine. A lot of trial and error. The watermarks were really tough for me (and still are). I put them away once they started being less fun. :)

Hi All, this is all really helpful. Very nice background on the vending machine this really makes it come alive. I will keep analyzing and hopefully I can at some point give an update.
