I can only find one listing on this stamp, but they seem quite different. The listing is for orange, but the stamp on the right has very dark colouring as well as the orange. Is it just a variety or is there another listing, that I have missed?

Yes, It appears to be a orange-brown instead of the orange listing.
I looked back to my 1938 Scott's just shows the one listing.
My Mexican specialized catalog only goes to 1900, three years too soon.
It appears that it's not a big deal. I'd keep it though!

The 1899 issue has an orange-brown in the 3c stamp. I agree it does look a bit similar, but there seems to be some variability in the coloration of the above stamp.

I wonder if this is an example of orange ink darkening with sulfur exposure. Is there any reason a short bath in hydrogen peroxide would harm this stamp?

Aren't they the 1903 Scott #307 (2007 prices MNH $1.10 USED .35)
I think you will find that the colors right for this issue or close enough to orange.

Orange inks tend to turn to brown-black when they oxidize. You have a changeling.

I would agree with OttawaMike. Orange US Revenues are notorious for this. It looks like it has oxidised.
