This is one of the cool things I found sorting through my grandfather's cigar box full of Washington/Franklin stamps. He passed away back in 1997 and I'm just now going through some of his stuff. He turned me on to stamps at pretty early age, something I am forever grateful for. Anyway, I think this pair is way cool and wanted to share it with you all.

It's a nice way to verify that these are indeed coils and not trimmed regular issues or reperforated imperfs. I buy these when I can find them.

Pair above looks good to my hobbyist eye but note that paste-up pairs are also faked.

As it turns out, there is a J. Merritt Brundige, Sr (1903-1965), and also a Jr (1931-2020). Although both are said to have been philatelists, it appears that Jr left the business as a young man to pursue other endeavors. Bottom line is: the 'sales card' that accompanies the pair is likely from the 1940's or 1950's, and the associated price/value is also from that era. Although re-perfing has been done for many, many decades, these perfs look good enough and would have to have been reperfed mid-20th Century or before. Although not impossible, I would say there is a much smaller chance of this being reperfed then than later when it was in possession of your family. For what it is worth, this particular series (Perf 12 vertical, Washington-Franklins) has been highly re-perfed because some of them are quite valuable. Looking at it from a half mile away, this pair looks authentic.

Any thoughts on what the penciled numbers on back are referring to? Guessing the stamped "m.b." initials on back are from Merritt Brundige.
