They genuinely do not make them like they used to. This album is unused and is being sold by Muller in an upcoming auction with a starting price of 2100 Euros, down from the previous opening of 3000 Euros.

The description:

Quote:
World - a wonderful thick Schaubek illustrated album worldwide from 1891 with gilt edge and clasp. The cover with wonderful embossment and chiselled, as usual Unavoidable slight traces of use only in the cover, the not from large meaning are. In total includes the album over 500 sides. There are sides for the issues worldwide included. A costliness the philately history! (former starting price: 3000,- Euro)

It's lovely, although I'd be shocked if they got near €2,100.

Very nice item - I'm a bit of an old book collector too (mostly 19th century travel), so I'd be tempted to have that on a bookshelf but not at that price...

Looks amazing, more like something from a sci fi show.

It's the oddest stamp album I've ever seen. Looks very much like an American family/pulpit Bible from the same era.

I would guess that the leather has been 'touched up' a bit…at a minimum.

As an ex-bookbinder, I can say that close to 100% of the Holy Bibles of this style we accepted for repair required having the spine replaced. The hinges and spine are the first to fail. So, if this stamp album still has all original, sound parts…it's pretty amazing. Must have been kept in a museum under optimal conditions.

Items like this, of this enormous size and weight, and for this amount of money, are typically bought with some kind of investment value in mind. It's unlikely someone would buy this album in the same way they might buy a copy of the stamp album they once had as a child or an album they just liked to look through. This is just too enormous and too expensive for that. So I wonder if someone will see this as an investment -- or will it be attractive to a stamp museum of which there are at least a few, like a Gutenberg Bible would be?

And albums like this can't really be used for mounting stamps anymore. Modern stamp mounts would ruin the album. For one thing the thickness of the mounts would quickly make the pages bulge out badly. The open ends of the pages would soon grow wider, destroying the look of the album. Not to mention the damage to the pages. You'd have to use hinges, but they'd have to be older high-quality hinges and even then you'd be ruining the paper. And what about the paper? It's already really old, so who would actually want to mount their stamps on this paper? No, it's an object to be looked at, not used. I have no idea how an auction firms comes up with prices like this, but I'm going to guess this thing will be hard to sell.

On the other hand, maybe I should buy it and carry it around to stamp shows from dealer to dealer while I tried to fill it. In a luggage cart, of course. Maybe even put wheels on it.

I have an old family picture album that looks eerily similar. Leatherwork on the cover (different design) with a similar latch, etc. Each page is like 1/4" thick to handle the thick photos of the 1880's/90's. The condition on the one for sale here, though, is much better. Apparently, there were lots of 'viewing sessions' back in the day among my ancestors. Mine got left to me with all the pictures in it - to me, THAT's the real value.

They sure don't make them like that anymore!!!
