I'm almost finished with my Abu Dhabi collection and at the point where I need to start thinking about buying the two overprinted stamps to finish the collection. Scott #55A - 1969 stamp and #80 - 1971 stamp.

I know forgeries exist but can't find any information on them.

I think I saw a post ages ago here or somewhere else, but can't find it.

Does anyone know a good source for info on these forgeries, basically how to tell them apart when trying to buy it.

These stamps are not that expensive to warrant a sert.

I see your problem. I'm having the worst time trying to locate any thing of a description. I have checked all my known forgery sites.

They are probably not publishing any details due to the fact the stamps aren't worth much as legitimate stamps.

I would check the overprints to known collection images in the major database houses and catalog companies. Not the best choice, can't really guarantee their image, but it's better than nothing. The overprint should be very precise and clean. Whereas a forgery would not be as crisp or clean edged, in the majority of cases.

No one wants to get a forgery. Yet I have the beginnings of a decent collection starting, amassed over the last several decades. Mostly acquired through inherited collections. They have bitten me also, and as you said, they aren't valuable enough to warrant a cert.

I wish you luck.

To follow-up on what Stamp Hunting said, Cherrystone has some really good images of these overprints in their sale archives.

For comparison:
I received this in a large "sand dunes" collection/accumulation back in the 1990s.
It looks nice, never checked into forged overprints.

Thank you everyone. Yes, the auction houses probably would be a good place to start, but again there is no 100% guaranty that those stamps are genuine as most would be without the cert.

Rod,

I see that the example you are showing has a black "shadow" around the overprint. I'm watching this modestly priced example on ebay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/374035557146

which also has this type of "shadow". I'm not sure that genuine overprint should have this kind of feature, but I could be wrong.
