Hello,

I have recently acquired a lot including 2 large red storage boxes in 102 size and that is very well stocked to start with Hungary. As I am unfamiliar with this country and my only reference at the moment is the scott 2017 catalog and the web, I am asking for your help. I am in the process of inventorying and sorting what I already had and these 2 boxes.

I came across the following stamp that was filed in pocket #616 (Scott numbering). And I noticed later that color wise, it more closely matches #686 (F NH) except that it doesn't have the 1p surcharge. Have you ever seen one like this? Is it a variety? And value wise compared to #686 with overprint?

Thank you in advance for your help

Michel # 739 (most likely Scott # 616 indeed)

Thanks vayolene,

However the 616 is not with Yellow Surface-tinted Paper like the #686. Mine doesn't seem to match either one unless it's a variant.
616

686

Sorry for the multiple edits, I'm using the forum for the first time

Thanks Petert4522, but I already use Stamp Mate 2022 for my inventory.

Hi Parici,
I still find your example curious.
Going by the muted colour, I am thinking perhaps your stamp has been soaked in hot water?
Does it have full gum?

Here is my Scott #616 1943 A109 1 pengo Green.

Hi rod222, yes he has all his gum and it's shiny as new.

Thanks Parici

Then it beats me! you have a curiosity.
I'll dig out my 2 Hungarian Catalogues, but I envisage a language barrier.

I can see no reference to this.
Philatalia Hungarica 1956 adds these notes to the "Great Military Leaders"

" Colour shades, blotches, and parts missing in tinting, Flaws and parts missing in surcharges"

So I guess poor quality control at that time, a problem with your scanner,
or light damage, may be responsible.

You'll need a specialist

Magyarorszag Belyegei quotes Zumstein and Yvert numbers
of 722 and 628 for this stamp, if you have those catalogues.

Thanks rod222 for your help. Once my inventory for Hungary is completed, if the value is worth it, I may invest in the Philatalia Hungarica specialized catalog that you mention. Thanks for the excerpt ;)
