I have a used 1869 3ct stamp, Scott 114, without detectable grill. My Scott specialized catalogue only mentions an unused gummed 114a, and not an used one at all! Is my stamp false, or could it be authentic? And if so, how much is its worth? Or could it be that the grill is so vague I cannot notice it? Hope the picture of the backside can give you information that helps!

Hi Cor - It is not unusual to have a difficult time seeing the grill on these issues. The search function of this forum will return numerous topics regarding this.

Why is there four corners of the stamp, albeit one badly thinned, when seen from the front and only three from the back?

There is a heavy inktstain on the back in the right upper corner that shines through, that is the reason the right upper corner seems thinned.

Cor - Is it possible to get a picture and post it here that shows the faint grill you saw with the correct angle lighting? I would be real curious to see that as I cannot see any grill in the images you presented and I would like to be aware of what to look for on some of my own 114's.

Also, I have both a 2017 Scott Specialized Catalogue of US Stamps & Covers and a 2022 Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue of Stamps & Covers and both of them show values for 114a in both unused and used versions, and also with gray paper. Which year of Scott catalogue are you using?
