This is a surcharged stamp. How common is it that one side is not perforated?

Can you place a rule up against the edge to see if it is perfectly straight?
Possibly a "Wing Margin" stamp that has the perforations trimmed off?

PS: That is one beautiful stamp!

Then you'll need a specialist (Clive?)
Perhaps individual panes were guillotined from the sheet

The original stamp is 1878, which confirms Wing Margins.
There were no wing margins after 1880 ( GB SG # 157)

Depends on what Stamp print number in each pane.

Rod,

Love that Transvaal 1/2D ebay listing you posted. The reason it is interesting to me is the seller terms shouted out in the description...

I wonder what recourse the seller thinks they have if the buyer does not receive the item.

Stanley Gibbons notes that margin stamps from this issue can be imperf on one or two sides.

John,
Unknown, it mentions "contest" the claim.
Up to ebay I guess.

Smoke and mirrors. There is no such claim without tracking...
Kind of like putting "Sold As-Is" or "No Returns."
Totally meaningless, if not as described, or not received.

I honestly don't know why I find such things interesting!

Unfortunately, I am very far from a specialist
The 1878 Transvaal Queen Victoria stamps were printed in sheets with the outer edges left imperforate.

As a result, the four corner stamps in a sheet were imperforate on two adjacent edges. The stamps from the left side of the sheet would be imperforate on the lefthand edge, similarly, the stamps on the right side of the sheet would be imperforate on the righthand edge. And the remainder of the stamps would be perforated all around.

It is interesting to note, that despite being scarcer, for example, only four stamps per sheet are imperforate on two sides, SG lists these stamps with one or two edges imperforate at about a 30% discount from the fully perforated examples.
