Once you have scanned a stamp, you can easily ID by doing an online image search

Instructions are here if needed.

Poland, 1920. The "POLSKA" I imagine would have made that part, at least, obvious.

Don't know why I bother... no point in helping anyone learn, just give them the answer.

I appreciate you, Don. I have a weakness for snarky replies, and sometimes that means going the easy route and not fighting the good fight.

¿Por qué no los dos?

(For those who don't speak meme, "Why not both?")

We can show someone what to do, while also addressing the current question. That has the chance of creating a meaningful thread.

Someone will post about the vignette; someone will mention the varying currencies, maybe the perfs and papers. Before you know it rod pastes in a fragment from Fischer and pretty soon you have a neat little thread.

OP, if you have access to a Scott catalogue, check 146.

My 2d. Or 2F, in this case.

Stamp collectors are overall good folk and collectively generous to a fault. The stamp says "Polska" and we still politely help. On a recent other thread, as "Betty" gushes about her extraordinary Scott 613 yet can't be bothered to post an image, many still come to offer advice. The forum continually reaffirms my positive opinion of the community.

The first thing we see on the stamp is "poczta polska".
If one was to copy "poczta polska" to google - the answer would have appeared instantly - Poland.
Then, a simple search in any online catalog, like stampworld, would have identified the stamp.

I don't mind helping with the identification, whoever does then don't post anything.

Poland 1920
Catalogs:
Michel 115
Scott 146
Yvert et Tellier 215
Stanley Gibbons 141

That's aggressive.
Try and give appreciation for differing points of view.

I agree, but that's the point I took from Carl20's (mildly strident) post.

I recall in the good old days a newcomer could ask several i.d. questions before someone would get impatient. It feels to me that a newcomer is more likely to get roasted now in the first post or two. I don't think we're necessarily coming off as gentle and forgiving?

Could be wrong. Just my 2d.

Southpaw2023....I see you are new to this forum, are you also new to the hobby? If so, Welcome...! There is a lot of knowledge here...as well as MANY levels of experience in researching the multiple facets of Philately! As you will learn, it takes time to figure out the various countries, but dont get discouraged. Find an old Scott catalog (old ones are cheap) and check out the stamp identifier section. Some of the earlier albums had a section to help identify worldwide stamps also. Cheers!

Having spent over two decades moderating forums, the following opinion is NOT about the original poster of the thread but rather about providing help in general. Please also note that the following is my personal opinion and NOT forum policy. So here are a few of my thoughts on helping people in general.

1. Note the forum by-line underneath the forum name at the top of the page. It says "Education is the key to collector success" and does not say "Come here for free appraisals".
2. If we are in agreement that education is the primary purpose of this community, then we can consider those that help others as teachers. Teachers typically do not simply provide only the answer to a question but rather demonstrate or illustrate how to arrive at the answer. If I was helping a person do their homework, I would not just give them the answer. Instead, I would try to help them 'learn how to learn' so they would come away with something far more valuable than a single catalog number.

I do think there can be certain situations where only giving a person an identifying catalog number is appropriate.
1. If a person posts their question along with an outline of what discovery they have already done. If the original post includes discovery steps and results then it demonstrates they already understand the identification process. When an identification request includes things like perforation discovery, watermark discovery, and any search discovery results then I think it is more appropriate to give a simple answer.
2. If the person asking the question is already known to have significant experience.

It is true that some new members come into this community only to get appraisals for material they have inherited. I think that posting an overview of what they own and then asking about how to disposition the material is certainly fine. But posting hundreds of images and expecting the community to provide a stamp-by-stamp value identification is not realistic. This is true not only for those who are posting, but it is also true of the majority of people (those who never post). Does anyone really want to read through endless threads of 'What is this stamp' and replies of '1234'?

Lastly, there is the point about motivation. Why would anyone invest time and effort in giving another member identification process help when another member spends a fraction of the time just posting the catalog number?
