I will point out two items of information which seem to have been overlooked regarding this new offering:

First the title, "The Kensington Canyon Collection Part 1" indicates this is not the entire collection.

Second, in the text description this can be found, "Those efforts are well represented by this first offering of numerous albums, folders, stock pages, all well filled with valuable items, presenting us with a difficult task to provide a description that could possibly do this marvelous lot justice."

And just for fun here is the full text:

Lot 1895 */o
Worldwide, The Kensington Canyon Collection Part 1, This magnificent holding represents the first installment of a substantial collection assembled by a self-described "old school" philatelist, who has been buying intact collections over the years, and removing "the chaff", usually any stamps later than the 1950's, while augmenting the earlier period with higher-value items, seemingly always with the aim of creating a higher "value-to-bulk ratio", so that whatever he held onto would represent a high concentration of quality and value in a relatively small package. Those efforts are well represented by this first offering of numerous albums, folders, stock pages, all well filled with valuable items, presenting us with a difficult task to provide a description that could possibly do this marvelous lot justice. A list of all the highlights to be found here would be far too extensive to be sensible as $100, 500+, 1000+, and even multi-thousand $ items (noting relevant certificates and expert signatures on these) are peppered throughout, so our best advice for coming up with a valuation here, would be to make an intensive and thorough in-person viewing, or at least a review of the many photos posted on-line.

Just to establish a good sense of the nature of this delectable offering, we can say that quality is far above the norm with very few faults to be found, and a great proportion of VF with a huge presence of NEVER HINGED among the mint, nearly all of which in some areas is found in that condition here, even in earlier issues seldom found NH, where huge premiums apply. While some countries or areas may be predominantly represented by used, and other, mint, or mint never hinged, there are some with both mint and used, with some used hiding behind the mint. Also, to give good sense of the nature of this assemblage, we comment on some of the more impressive sections as follows: among the extensive British Commonwealth, abounding in better sets of the ever popular late QV through KGVI area, we note virtually complete Falkland Islands mint (except for 2½d South Georgia provisional), with Centenary set to £1 value, plus a specialized complete run of QV and later shades including rare KGVI; Leeward Islands complete mint and good George VI shades to £1, Caymans near complete, Ireland with Seahorses complete plus scarce varieties, great early mint Canada with Jubilee complete, much GB with numerous £ values, also plenty of good British Africa, America, Asia, Oceania, and Europe. Among the impressive Europe we note Andorra (Spanish and French) complete mint, Austria near complete with WIPA and Renner souvenir sheets, Belgium with good semi posted sets like 1918 red cross completes, Mercier, Orval, plus seldom seen scarce overprints on these; beautiful Baltic States collection; Denmark extensive specialized with rare advertising booklet panes, good early Finland, terrific France with semi portals complete including B3-10, great airmails including C5a never hinged with cert, much of France never hinged; Germany represented by a gorgeous collection in 3 hingeless albums with much present BOTH mint (most never hinged) and used (often behind the mint) with airmail complete used and many also mint NH, plus private air issues, extensive 3rd Reich near complete with nearly all mint represented by never hinged corner margin examples! Also, there are scarce WWII issues including Feldpost, UBoat, French Legion Polar Bear souvenir sheet; we note stunning Italian Colonies and offices group full of $500 and 1000+ sets plus multi $1000 items, including near complete offices in Turkey with #11* cat $17,500 with certificate and Constantinople J1-6 used with certificate, nice full Liechtenstein Collection, Luxembourg with nice classics and an Intellectuals set; Monaco mint complete to 1940 but for rare B18 and J4, good Iceland like 1930 Parliament officials used! Norway also present, decent Portugal, great Spain with submarine and other scarce civil war era items plus scarce semi postal and airmail issues; Sweden not to be overlooked with rare items like 90, 92 mint Varnamo provisionals rarely seen in a collection lot! Switzerland also impressive with good souvenir sheets, better sets, scarce early mint officials.

This lot, certainly the most valuable single lot we have ever offered, represents a rare opportunity for a worldwide collector to significantly improve their collection or for the mail auctioneer, retailer, or internet seller to put forth a spectacular range of material including iconic items galore, which will be certain to bring new customers while strengthening one's base; also works well for the public auctioneer or wholesale seller of collections, as it will break down nicely into a great group of mouth watering lots. If you fall into one of the above categories, you ought to give this lot some serious attention and a strong bid.
Estimate $200,000 - 300,000.

Edit to add--

It would make a great come back for me wouldn't it?

Perhaps more than just an "a" rather several comebacks. There will be a part II seemingly as well. Then the real question becomes just how many parts are there?

From a review of the material in the PDF, I observe there are missing sections from a WW collection:

- East Asia seems unrepresented in the images. China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, possibly Burma and Thailand. The only exception I saw was many pages of Malaya and States

- There was very little representation of Scandinavia and Nordic. Perhaps this is due to page selection, which towards the end of the PDF was terribly disorganized

- There seems to be an absence of Central and South America

- I recall seeing a fair amount of New Guinea, but not Papua. Same for Australia- I don't recall seeing any Roos.

- The images showed an extensive collection of both low and high Leeward varieties (papers, shades, perfs, some flies & dies), but not much from Bermuda keys

Perhaps these are areas which may appear in "Part II?"

Looking through the singles portion of the main catalog and the Gems of Philately catalog I see some items that, though I can't prove it, could have been culled from the Kensington collection. The really pricey much more esoteric material that the main collection seems to have in abundance.

On the Kensington collection , I can't come up with the number you would need as a reseller to make that purchase profitiable.

I am using $250,000 as a purchase price and keep coming up short. First is trying to figure a total catalog figure , It would have to top $2,000,000 close to $2.5 million catalog . I can not come up with that big of a catalog number .

I don't think that 10% of cv is going to buy that collection. I found a lot of comparable sales for items in that collection that were in the 30% of cv and up, some way up, range. That being said what it opens for is unknown at this time.

IMO it will sell to a retailer/auctioneer that already has buyers lined up for many items. Someone that can bid knowing that they have their costs covered and the balance is gravy. Just like Ed from Century and Posner do with US material.

That is what viewing prior to auction is all about. Travel expenses to view is nothing compared to the hammer price for a serious buyer.

Wow, that is a very rough segmentation of the largest stock I've ever personally seen. Will be very interested in final realizations for these. I would imagine much of the A&D material, lotted as it is, will be interesting to only dealers. Didn't realize A&D was ready to shed all their stock. Their website is still up, but has something happened to Jim Dempsey?

Falmouth Stamp's website says they are still in business but in the process of buying to build stock. I only saw one lot of theirs in the Kelleher auction, comprising what appears to be most or all of their US stock. The lot is starting at only $5,000. Perhaps I missed copy in US and Foreign dealer stock lots atributed to Falmouth.

Reading between the lines as all of the A&D material is listed as "ex- A& D..." it seems perhaps someone (Kelleher) approached Jim and offered cash for it all, well at least the stamps. I saw no coins.

Other than that, I find no negative news about Jim, nor did I wish to call him and ask. The website is up if anyone wants to call.

As to "did anything happen to Jim" I will point out he did retire from show dealing and is in his 90's. He can move it all at once for his heirs if he wishes.

Jim has not passed, nor is he ill as far as I know. He just decided it was time to sell and solicited offers and sold it a few weeks ago.

He had no coin inventory. He ha a partner who did coins (presumably named Axxxx), but they parted ways after their first show. He did buy coins, but sold them to another coin dealer quickly after they came in, so no inventory.

Let get this correct -----Kelleher has a auction lot up for their coming auction ,that is 574 red dealer boxes . They are looking for a $50,000.00 opening bid ,let's see that is $100.00 per box to you the buyer . If the boxes are completely filled that would be about 800 cards . So the price your paying is about 13 cents per 102 card .

Other dealers looking at this will say ,how many stamps per card , are these mostly minmium value stamps ,are these mostly incomplete sets or broken sets ? Then the biggest factor and this is very important to everybody are these boxes been picked over by hundreds of dealers and collectors. I can guarentee you all the Germany Colonies and German areas like Danzig,Baltics and States have been picked clean of better cancels and railroad cancels .I also know the Dutch East Indies has been cleaned of better cancels and perf varitities . Plus hundred other things which I know nothing about because these boxes have been to many ,many shows .

No doubt some dealers will exercise due diligence and thoroughly review the material to come up with a sensible number. Then someone like NYStamps will just keep bidding until they own it no matter what.
