A few weeks ago, I was invited to give a presentation for a continuing education class at a nearby university. The class is described as follows

Quote:
Stamping Through History, A Philatelic Journey
Have you ever had a stamp collection? Do you have a stamp collection that you inherited? This course will look at the basics and the many possibilities of the hobby of stamp collecting. We will talk about how a person can start a stamp collection at any age and how to narrow the focus. This course will also include stories about the history behind U.S. and worldwide stamps.
You will learn about the history of stamp collecting. The hobby of stamp collecting is still very much alive today. There are about five million people in the U.S. and more than 60 million people worldwide that are involved with some aspect of stamp collecting. There are many interesting avenues to explore in relation to what some have called "the hobby of a lifetime."

The class already had a number of other presentations on stamps so I decided to do my presentation on postal history. The presentation was to be 35-45 minutes long and that length is outside my comfort zone (having sat through countless company presentation I am quite familiar with 'death by PowerPoint' so I normally try to keep duration under 20 minutes). I also wanted my presentation to have a context of US history and touch upon just some of the very wide scope of postal history covers. I intentionally avoided specialized information and wanted more of a US postal history overview. I also tried to avoid the typical PowerPoint look and feel and make it a smoother and more seamless.

"Unfolding History - Exploring America's Past Through Postal Covers"
Embark on a captivating journey through time where we will unlock the secrets of America's rich heritage, not through the traditional pages of history books, but rather through the fascinating world of postal covers.
From early colonial days to the era of westward expansion, from the Civil War's battlegrounds to Rural Free Delivery, from the advent of airmail to the automation of the mail stream, postal covers provide us with a tangible link to the past.

Morning Don and all,

Wonderful presentation that should be given a wider audience. Perfect for a basic introduction to postal history. Should be a part of the Stampsmarter library. Well done.

Best regards, Russ

The class is in a few weeks, but the teacher has previewed it and thinks it will be well received.

What a great job you've done and you never lost me with the length.
You covered so much it would be difficult to imagine how you could trim it down to just 20 minutes.
I don't collect US covers or stamps but I was riveted, well done and thanks for sharing.
