These have bugged me since I got them when I was 17, now in my 50's looking at them again.

Of the two, the taller one always bugged me. Is the taller one a 104?

One the backside scan, the taller one is one the bottom, looks like it has envelope remains still stuck to it and a tiny hinge.

Reprints like 104 were sold at an exhibition - not post offices - so they are all unused. Also the color of a 104 is darker.

No, not a 104. See this photo from another recent thread that shows this stamp (#65) comes in many shades.

See also Siegel Power Search for example for an idea of what the "brown red" shade of 104 looks like.

Also note that not all stamps in this color are going to be #104. Most are just a darker shade of #65, or possibly oxidized.
Yes, the paper on your taller stamp is a little brighter and whiter than the other one, but those differences are also natural with age and the environmental conditions how the stamps were stored over the last 150+ years. Zero chance (in my opinion) that either of your two stamps is a 104.

I dont see any grills, so are these likely 64Bs? I am poor at judging these aged colors

Always assume the most common identification, then work to eliminate that possibility.
Thus the starting point is that these are both Scott 65.

You are right, that was my bad. My eyes did not see #65 in my book. Dumb of me, I totally agree.
