I just noticed these on ebay, scan courtesy of ebay seller abn1, who states they glow in the dark. They do seem to have a cone-shape of something emanating from the light sources on each lighthouse.

Has anyone seen these or other stamps that glow in the dark? What do they look like?

I do not have those stamps, but that is correct. The actual "light" and the beam will fluoresce after exposure to light. It is not just luminescence, but a slow fluorescence. Basically, the longer you expose the stamp to light, the stronger and longer is will fluoresce (just like in glow-in-the-dark paper that you can buy at craft stores).

Really nice. Thanks for the info khj.

I wonder if, since this fluorescing is from a 'special glue' used, will that soak off and not be on a used copy, or a used copy that has been soaked, if New Zealand stamps can be soaked off?

I don't know the exact formulation used for the "glue". I'm assuming they use the term glue, because it was literally "applied" on and not "printed". I'd be surprised if it was water-based.

However, I would speculate that one might be able to scrape it off if one really wanted to, or make it fainter by prolonged soaking/rubbing in warm ever so-lightly bleached water. That would leave a tell-tale sign, however; and as with trying to remove surface taggant off stamps, it's almost impossible to remove all of it cleanly.

I normally don't collect recent issues, but I might keep an eye out for this one. I love "novel" stamps. This is not the first glow-in-the-dark stamp. The identity of the first one eludes me at the moment. Definite thanks for bring this issue to light (don't everybody groan at the same time).

The earliest glow-in-the-dark stamp that I can think of right now is a nocturnal animals set issued by Malaysia in early 2008. I know several countries followed afterward that year, including Hong Kong, Iceland, Jersey and maybe some others. Also, I believe Zazzle also introduced glow-in-the-dark personalized stamps later that year.

Maybe someone in the forum has those stamps and can post a pic, or maybe pilfer a few pics from somewhere. They were all issued in the 2008, slightly preceding the NZ issue of 2009.

Was there one before the Malaysian set? I'm going to need to sleep on that...

In October 1997 Australia Post issued a set of Creatures of the Night. The miniature sheet incorporated an extra design overprinted in phosphor, only visible in the dark. It was a spider and web. SG MS1719

I searched that info (Thank you) and found:

Australia 1997 souvenir / mini sheet
courtesy ebay seller brumstamp and also chonkarn
Seller brumstamp confirmed there is a 'spidery web' on the sheet.

Maxi (maximum) card courtesy ebay seller lobo8
Spotted-tail Quoll
I wonder if the spider web on here glows?

edit:
I must stop my pilfering. Nasty habit. Drinking caffeine is bad enough of a habit to have.
