"Organised haphazard" is just a phrase I coined Joel to attempt to describe Mr Witt's collection. It's neat, typewriter written and choc full of info, Here is Riga stamps site, honouring the cinderella collector. Hopefully you can see how his style remains the same throughout the majority of his sheets. http://www.cinderellas.info/wittcol...llection.htm |

rod222, Good Morning,
Actually, after quickly looking at some of the pages, this presentation is very enjoyable. Much better than page after page of mounted stamps with little or no text. Thanks for sharing. Joel |

Cheers guys, can you believe the collection was broken up ? That is one part of philately the I really have a problem dealing with. There should be a museum just for stamps with collections like those, retained. |

rod222,
Thanks again for sharing all the information. I see by this message board that you are quite active on the internet. Let me share with you another internet stamp club that is free and quite comprehensive. Try stamporama.com Also, would it be possible for you to post one of your handwritten pages. local time of post 1434 on 21 July 2010

Joel, I'll post a page soon, but it's pretty ordinary. Yep, there are a few forums out there, and more growing, but one is enough for any fellow I spend too much time here anyhows, but I post during gaps in preparing my tax return. I like it here, pretty laid back, and not much or |

As I said, pretty ordinary Still, it looks cool when you get an album together, and you can meander through the news. Offers freedom, which you need as a Cinderella collector. I'm toying with the idea of getting a suitable freehand font and printing the page with faux handwriting. Offers the edit option :) |

Quote: I'm toying with the idea of getting a suitable freehand font and printing the page with faux handwriting. I would suppose there are broadly two styles of self-designed album pages: those that attempt to mimic professionally prepared pages that are printed or those that look "home made" either because they use human hand fonts, typewriters or computer generated technics that are demonstrably home made. Personally, if you're going to make your own, don't hide from it, extenuate it and drawn out the potentialities of a home made album. Add design, lay out and text that speaks to your interest. In my view, unless you have access to and the ability to operate advanced DTP software on sturdy paper stock, you're best to let it hang out and don't try to hid the obvious: the album is mine and I made it. |

That's a very interesting commentary. I'll keep that in mind. I quite like my results, in the flesh I am quite satisfied with them, but the scanned image didn't look like it was up to scratch.

rod, I have to agree with the idea of letting your own style and personality be involved with your presentation. After all who is your main audience. You have to please your self. I like your handwritten page. I wouldn't do a thing to it. When I do this type of mounting, I look at it and see if there is any way that I would want to improve it and I would do the improvement on the next page. Once I complete a page I don't do them over. also I am a big fan of collateral material. I include maps, pamphlets as an addendum to the presentation. I do a lot historical research on some items and include extras into the presentation. Again, thanks for sharing your expertise and the links that you have provided. Joel

That's why I like this place.... Encouragement is like a boiled lolly, It's sweet and lasts a long time. I'm nearing completion of part 1 of the preamble to my Vasco Da Gama story. Before I handwrite, I'll try the faux handwriting and see what the judging panel thinks. |

I have to say that most of the club level exhibits that I have seen are home made pages with very good presentation style. I feel, that this hobby is too strongly influenced by the "infrastructure", that is the publishers of albums and periodicals, National clubs and the like. These persons seem to have originated from a bygone era. I feel that, local clubs and clubs like the ATA have more impact today then previous stewards of the hobby. I have gained more information about all aspects of the hobby because of the internet. Let the hobbyists prevail. Joel |

Very nice page Rod. Hand written pages have quality and character for sure. Your example is a very interesting topic too, the Nigerian mail scams. I used to do all my pages that way, but it got to the point when I could no longer read my own writing , and too many spelling mistakes. I wasted lots of pages. Here is one of mine: Now with computers, it is so much easier for me - especially with spell check. |
