Morning all, I am after recommendations on a France catalogue.
I currently use a Stanley Gibbons 2010 France and colonies, which is fine for general use, it includes perforations and major shades, but it has very little (if anything) in the way of listed plate flaws. I am considering a Maury catalogue, and have found two online, one a 2019 "Timbres des France" and a 2020-21 edition of '1849-1960 and varieties after 1960'. Was wondering if anyone had info on the content of each? Seems odd the second catalogue would only list varieties after 1960. Maybe another brand of catalogue would fit the 'plate flaw' requirement?
Any help much appreciated.
Regards
DavidR

David - Spink/Maury is the best catalogue for French stamps. It's excellent value, and you may as well buy the latest edition. The catalogue was divided into two volumes a few years ago. The part covering pre-1960 also covers varieties. Neither goes into minute detail about the range of minor flaws. For that, you may need to dig out a copy of the Cérès Catalogue des Variétés de France, 1900-1964". The copy I have was published in 1964. Coverage of pre-1900 is pretty good in Maury. There's also the Yvert specialised volume of French classics, although it's not necessarily as detailed as one might expect.

Spink/Maury is visually appealing but relies heavily on varieties that are either ambiguous ("impression défectueuse") or of only doubtful interest ("piquage à cheval", "impression sur raccord"). Very similar problem with the Catalogue des Variétés de France. So similar that it appears to be the basis for Maury. I've always preferred Yvert Spécialisé (vol. I 1849-1900, vol. II 1900-WWII): much more truly useful information. But, If you're able, examine copies of each to see which suits your interests and taste.
