I can't seem to find this in my Gibbons. I think it's an early Republic of China (Taiwan) issue.

It seems to have a red overprint on top of a black one.

An ID would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure if this is of any help.
As a starting point the underlying stamp is Chinese Republic 1949 SG 1212b, rouletted

Dear jimjamtwo

I don't have a Scott catalogue. But I can find your stamp in my Michel China catalogue from 2015. The issue is from November 1955, maybe this will help you to find it in the Scott catalogue.

Best regards from Switzerland
André

Thanks, everyone for the help, but as far as I can tell this is not the same stamp.

It is SG 1212b with red overprint (Taiwan SG 242), but it ALSO has a black overprint.

Which came first, the black or the red, I have yet to discover!

I see red and black intermixed here:

I find it very confusing trying to figure out what's happening here.

Regardless, there is clearly one thing on top of another.

Looks like Republic of China Scott #1151 with a heavy cancel. Per the catalog, the surcharge on #1151 is maroon (parts look black over the blue green). The date in Scott is 1956. It should be SG Taiwan 242.

Here's my unused example:

Note: No idea if my stamp is genuine.

Thanks for that, Nicholas C.

It's a very strange and unnecessarily complex pattern, isn't t?

I wonder why.

Perhaps that pattern in the overprint to the left and right of the numeral '3' is to intentionally obliterate whatever value or message was on the original stamp that is being revalued.

There was no value shown on the original stamp.
