I recently bought several sets of US revenue stamps. Among the popular stamps are 1 and 2 cents with the I.R. overprint. I found 4 such stamps (as in the photo). I haven't seen such hand-printed I.R. prints before. Is this real use or fake? The 10 cent stamp with I.R. pen erasure is also interesting. I am very curious about your opinion on this matter.

The only one of the four that MIGHT possibly be genuine is the one at upper right. The other 3 are bogus, in my opinion. All 3 have the same IR handstamp, yet the battleship revenue didn't need one, and the 2-cent Jamestown was issued long after the other two.

The 10-cent Webster could be genuine, but without context, i.e., the original document or fragment, we'll never know.

I do have two examples of the 10-cent Webster on document used as revenue stamps, so it is plausible.

I agree fully with revenuecollector, and would add that the postal cancels on the two commemoratives are dead giveaways that something is fishy with the "IR" on them.

No chance on the other three; as stated, the ten cent is probably genuine but without the document (or another document from the same company in the same time period) we will never know.
