The postmaster at Ed Kentucky was one of the most cooperative/prolific sources of fancy cancels during the late 1920s and early 1930s, many on registered covers. A quick search of ebay reveals about a dozen covers offered at the moment.

Loso & deWindt's "20th Century U.S. Fancy Cancelations", revised edition by Fishback & Dell in 1987 lists about 45 different ones from Ed, not to mention ink color variants on some. It would make a challenging collection.

Being in Louisvile, we handled a lot of ED, KY and other small Kentucky Post Offices who cashed in on 1930s cover collecting crazes which Postmasters were willing to do as it greatly increased their sales and kept some from being closed during the Depression. Kentucky has 120 counties, and has had thousands of Post Offices, many contract offices tied to local businesses in very small towns.

I've googled ED, Ed, E.D. Kentucky, and about all I've seen as a return is Eastern District, Kentucky.

Was/Is there a place named Ed, or is this topic referring to Eastern District? Just curious. Really cool cover, BTW!

This is from Jim Forte's list of Kentucky post offices : Ed, Casey County (1898-1941) . . . This is the whole Wikipedia article : "Ed was an unincorporated community in Casey County, Kentucky, United States.

Ed has been noted for its short place name."
