Until yesterday I did not know this stamp was printed in carmine lake . I know it can be in bright carmine rose, carmine rose, deep carmine rose and lake color. I was looking at an old post on this forum from 4 years ago and found a photo of the carmine lake shade. Here is a photo of my stamp (it is a block of four) and the photo I found on this forum. Maybe somebody can give me an opinion even though I know we can't rely on photos or scans.

Paid, I admire your enthusiasm to learn and dig into your stamps. However, if you have searched through very many threads here, you will find that it is extremely difficult to determine minor shade/color variants from scans due to differences in the original scanning equipment, settings, later image manipulation, viewing by the end user's equipment, and their own natural ability to judge color. There is no scanning/viewing standard. To have any chance it helps to have the subject-stamp scanned together with normal stamps of the same Scott #. Using the block here, it needs to be scanned with other copies of the same stamp so we have some direct comparisons. Pulling in scans from other websites done with different equipment, etc., is virtually worthless. Beyond that, finding rare shades, special printings, uncataloged items, etc., is like winning the lottery. They just don't happen in random collections/accumulations. Always assume you have the most common variety and you wil be correct 99.99% of the time. I suspect you will find as much pleasure in your stamps if you concentrate less on their value or treasure hunting and let an occasional one surprise you every few years. |

APS also has ones that they have certified as carmine lake. but again even on their site the colors do vary and is hard to compare. I remember a while back someone was using a app that will scan your stamp and provide analysis of the color content in a chart form and they were using this to compare to the chart of a authenticated stamp. Not sure if this worked or not. I think if it did, they could make the charts available of the authenticated stamps to use for comparison at home. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will buy a Scott 716 and compare it to my stamp to see how they compare. Would it be better to buy one certified so I know the exact color or does it matter?

Here is a photo of my stamps next to a golden gate carmine rose stamp and a golden gate deep carmine rose stamp. Do they look similar to each other? Deep Carmine rose is on the top and carmine rose on the bottom. |

On MY monitor to MY eyes the Golden Gate stamps look identical. |

Thoee are the only to colors they can be and yes dissapointly they do look the same. Swedish tiger only lists two colors for this stamp. When I was looking at the two stamps in person they where both different shades. Somehow the camera distorted it. |

(Dark carmine rose). |
