That's why most of mine are still in bulging packs of jumbo-sized glassines!

You could collect according to the Deegam Handbook - the 1p stamp alone has over 200 listings!

Well we won't mention that I collect Machin and that to some extend I in those varieties.

But, if I think about some of the things I have done recently with stamps, I remember that I recently bought a couple of collections of US Washington-Franklins. And, that with a couple of bottles of Clarity, a 30x scope, tongs and a copy of Micarelli at hand, I had a ton of fun going through all those stamps, several hundred of them. You never knew exactly what you'd find and that is one of the best thrills you get in this hobby. IMHO. So, I say, bring on the varieties. To each his own, I suppose.

the WF's I know a bit about because I have had to research all the ones I have..
I'll trade you my GB machin's for your WF's. LOL

Actually, if you like, you could always send me your Machins and I will gladly tell you want they are. Plus I'd return them to you of course.

Alternatively, Machin collecting can be made very simple.

The problem with Machins, to some degree, is that discussions about figuring out the direction of printing and the type of adhesive used or the type of screening used for the phosphorus scares people away. That is a real shame.

I presume you have seen the various web sites that are out there?

I feel your pain stampvirgin.

last year I started cataloguing my machins and got about half way through. I decided to set them aside for a bit so I wouldn't go totally crazy.

On the topic of cataloging Machins- my suspicion is that many in North America rely on the listings in Scotts to catalog. I am also assuming that people here are only interested in cataloging on the basis of value, color and maybe bands.

If that is the case, in my opinion, Scotts is hopeless and virtually guaranteed to frustrate. The listing are in essentially in order of date of issue. There are these little squares or color scattered about. So, finding where a particular 20p stamp goes requires scanning over the Scott's listing for the 85th time. I understand the frustration. Its no wonder given 39 trillion different Machins having been issued since 1967.

Alternatively, if you were to invest in a copy of Gibbons Concise (easily obtained from Amazon.co.uk) you would find, wonder of wonders, an index of Machins by value-an amazing break-though in philatelic technology! With this index you look up the value, check the color and the catalog number is indicated. Its really simple and takes little to no time. Its easy. Really.

If you still want to know the Scott MH number, that is now made easy. Since the SG listing gives the date of issue, looking up the equivalent listing from SG to Scotts is simple.

Just my thought on how to lower this frustration level.

-Larry
