I would like to confirm that the "dots in curved frame" is the dashes in the right side of the curved frame.

They are the five dots at the center of the arch. I have never seen them so washed out as your example though unless it is your image. They look drawn in although the placement is correct.

Beautiful stamp, rogdcam, and beautiful scan. Which scanner did you use? Here is the best I could do with my Canon Pixma which I thought was pretty good, but the details are much fuzzier than yours.

The dots appear on plate number 882.

When Henry Gobie wrote his book,The Speedy: A History of United States Special Delivery Service, published in 1976 he was unable to get a clear photo of the dots. A couple of years later 1979 or 80, I took a photo for him. I need to use my high end macro-photography equipment which actually could be used as low level micro-photography.

Today most any point and shoot digital camera with close up features can produce the image with the dots. Edited to add: Most high resolution scanners can pick up the dots clearly.

That was not the image of my stamp but it had the marks I circled and in rodgam's image.
