So, for years now I've been dabbling in building a collection of modern State revenues and taxpaids. In the modern era, these seem mostly to be cigarette tax, though there are others here and there.

It's HARD to find the modern material! I'm currently in Florida, and since I moved here in 2006, there have been (2) updates on the cigarette stamp, occurring at about 2010 and 2020. So...I have (3) different FL stamps.

I've tried to get other states through such places as CraigsList, but this has resulted in only a few new states added.

A few years ago, I put a couple of lots of maybe (10) FL current-issue stamps on ebay; all sold easily for a few bucks for the lot. So...I think there's interest out there.

Figuring out which stamps are available from the various States, getting images of them, it's all been very difficult.

I'd like to hear from other collectors who are interested in the taxpaids of modernity! Please respond if you collect, share a little about your holdings, maybe some images. I'm trying to decide how I should build an album for these stamps, but it's hard, not knowing what's out there.

Please respond if you're a collector of these stamps!

Josh

I have a bunch of duplicate NY state stock revenues. I was able to get pages for them from another collector a few years back, which really helped me sort out the different varieties.

@Mastodon, you might want to join the State Revenue Society, link here: https://staterevenue.org.

They have regular auctions of state revenue material, including modern stuff, for members. The journal is outstanding. I've been a member for years. I mostly collect older material (well, by "older" I mean 1930's-1950's, but not 21st century stuff).

I should mention that the State Revenue Society also publishes an epic catalog of state revenues that goes right up to present day. They're working on an update even now, although I don't know when it's coming out.

Oh, and now that I think of it, the leading dealer of state (and other revenues) is Eric Jackson, website here: https://www.ericjackson.com.

He has tons of material for sale and runs his own monthly auction. Over the years I've purchased some one-of-a-kind material from him. Prices are good and I can vouch for his service (he does a lot of the bigger stamp shows, too).

They are. The Texas stamps might be the most fun ones. Some are still available from the State Revenue Society.

The last issue of the SRS journal just illustrated a new 2025 Kansas state marijuana tax stamp (actually a "Kansas Drug Tax Stamp"). A marijuana leaf and a bottle of pills are illustrated on a gold background. Face value $10.

Guilty as charged!!

I collect state revenues from all 50 states (to include city/county/etc.), DC, and Puerto Rico.

Focus on west coast states, but I have strong collections for PA, DE, NY, FL, AL, GA, MI, WI, etc. My NM is a focus area. I am meh for F&G (except NM).

I also collect Scott listed federal revenues, have revenue calendar collections for 1862 - 1875 and battleships.

For anyone even slightly interested in state revenues, I strongly encourage you to risk $17.50 for a year membership. Probably the best deal in philatelic society memberships!

At the risk of duplicating links from above, check out the State Revenue Society website athttps://staterevenue.org/.

Fast forward straight to the membership page at https://staterevenue.org/join

The SRS even has a sales service where they buy tax stamps directly from the states and you can buy them from the SRS.

I personally make my own hingeless pages. An example page for NM liquors:

Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to get you answers!

Let me underscore what Kent Gray has said about the State Revenue Society. It is a real bargain at $17.50 a year. The information published in its journal provides a lot of information about the origins and reasons for state and local taxes.

My personal interest in the area of taxation by states is of alcohol, oleomargarine, and food products. Yes, that is a peculiar combination.

I have collected comprehensively the state and local stamps of Pennsylvania (where I was born), Delaware, and Maryland (where I now live). I especially fond of real estate transfers in Pennsylvania, where it is possible to find a deed with four sets of tax stamps: federal, state. local municipality, and school district.

Not really so peculiar, in essence they are all "food products".

Obviously industrial alcohol is not, but there are more stamps for drinking alcohol anyway.
