The 25 cent one is still attached. Is it as easy as removing regular stamps? Is it better off left alone?

I believe these are printed on very thin paper. You might want to leave it just to be safe

I suspect that the 25 cent is a fake. Not sure about the other, need a better scan of the bottom. Check to see if they are embossed.

The newspaper stamps don't look right even with the low-res pics.

Would like to see a good scan of the two-dollar State as well. It's just odd that these stamps are with the other low value items.

They were actually with some other higher value revenue stamps. I really haven't even gone through all of them yet.

$2 State looks very small, especially the height, although that might be because of the scan.

Do you mean a small stamp compared to the other nearby stamps, or do you mean small margins?

I think that could be partly because of the scan. The stamp looks very curled. I would suspect a reperfed proof, and regummed, which caused the curling.

I agree, the newspaper stamp is best left on piece. For all we know, the stamp may be very fragile and was glued on piece to preserve/strengthen it. Nor do we know what kind of glue was used. Soaking it could damage it even more.

Edit: [to ask, did you mean small stamp overall or small margins?]

The two-dollar State is way too well centered for the issue. Money is on not genuine.

I wish to answer your question:

without wading into the are they genuine pool.

In general newspaper stamps on the original billing paper is quite scare and should be left attached. Now if you are saying it is backed by an old album page or other non-use related adhering paper or card stock just understand these monster sized stamps can be rather fragile. Nor can you be sure what adhesive was used to adhere the two items together and that it is fully water soluble.

The $2 state is a proof with counterfeit perfs. I suspect that the $5 is bad too, it does not look engraved. The 25 cent newspaper is also fake. The five cent looks pretty good.

The 25 cent newspaper is also fake.

As mentioned in another thread recently, look at the tiny lettering at the bottom of your newspaper stamps, "National Bank Note Company New York" is very crisp and clear on the 5 cent, but smudgy and hardly readable at all on the 25 cent (assuming that both recent photos were taken with the same camera and lighting).

When comparing the details of the stamp on the left with the "genuine proof" on the right, there is less detail in the background of the tablet at the bottom on the $5, and it looks like there are slight differences in the tip of Seward's nose and the front of the hairline and other areas.

But what first jumped out at me on the $5 is the scuffed lettering of the word "STATE". My suspicion is that this was a Senf facsimile with the word "FACSIMILE" scraped off, the "STATE" lettering re-painted, and then fake cancels added to further hide the alterations.
