I have been noting that envelopes used for airmail service in Mexico display the colors of the Mexican flag (green, red and white) in the standard patter. I have always thought of red, white and blue as proper airmail colors . Granted, France, the UK, the US and several other countries have these as their national colors. Anyone have any examples of other colors used on airmail envelopes? Thanks!

They are generally considered to be airmail "lozenges" They come in a vast array, and in fact, can make a fascinating display, (jets, birds etc) Here is one from (The Emerald Isle) Ireland : |

Thanks for the primer, Rod. Found some unusually-shaped lozenges from Colombia. I am going through my first collection from 1975-8. |

I recently saw a collage of paper from the inside of airmal covers, there must have been about 50 papers, the effect was absolutely amazing. BTW that is the first time seen the Mexico of yours.

It is a good thing I didn't get around to soaking the stamps off the paper, which consisted of my understanding of philately in the 1970's.
I just had to add, that wallet is hilarious! |

Actually Smauggie, It would be interesting to work towards finding the first appearance of the lozenge on an airmail. Put philately to work. The earliest I have IIRC is 1949 You can see the early form of colur code on this early 1929 cover to Stanly Gibbons in the airmail etiquette. so red white and blue is beginning. It genesis is the coloured wax crayons on the registered parcels so I read some time ago. |

Here are some I have; these are some of those I was talking about cutting corners - guess I see now, why not... anyway; a few other colors. I was wondering about the color range on those from Pakistan... are they possibly different regions (states within)since postmarks are all similarly late 70's? Here's one from Brazil These next 3 are from Pakistan. Here are a couple from Taipei. And a couple of embossed, classic US |

At least it's getting organized so that I can actually participate in things. I feel GREAT that I even knew I had these. :) |

Great examples from Brazil and Pakistan, the Egyptian are a knockout, Nefertiti (the sofely spoken one) could any woman have such an amazing neck? An image that doesn't age, after 3000 years, you could see a face like that on any modern fashion magazine. Write your name in Egyptian Heiroglyphics http://www.quizland.com/hiero.mv |
