I am guessing that the first is the pale blue #53, and the second is the dark blue #54? Or perhaps it's the bright blue #55? Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Riley111,
Thank you for sharing. It is really hard to tell these varieties a part even if you see them with your own eyes, let alone from a scan which can alter subtly. I have many of these and go back and forth a lot--my approach is to compare 20-30 individual stamps to sort of tell. I also have a bunch on covers and with the date cancelation I can determine the color and match from there individual stamps. Try this perhaps.

From the NSSC, we know there were 3 primary color varieties of this stamp, engraved by the British American Bank Co, Montreal between 1880 and 1898.
1. The pale blue (with white gum) in 1880 and mint NH has a $450 guidepost value. (somewhat rarer)
2. the dark blue (in Nov 1887), maybe $90
3. the bright blue (Dec 1984), maybe $50.

If I had to guess. I would say you have the bright blue on the left and the dark blue on the right.
