Thank you for taking a look at my first stampless cover. I hope to get more as my stamp collection grows.
Here is what I know and what I don't know.
The letter is addressed to Benjamin Chapman Esq. so that would make him a lawyer (Esquire). The Cancellation is from Burlington Vermont, addressed to Cornish NH. There is a date of August 27 without the year, so that would be a mystery.

Here is a closeup of the cancel, no year that I can see. However there is reference to August 26 in the letter, so the letter was mailed the day after it was written.

Here is an image of the letter, split into two images. I did my best to read what it says but it is in cursive and is hard to decipher. However, the gist of the letter is a request for money but the writer states that he/she will be leaving soon and is afraid the money will not arrive in time. I'm not sure of the remedy for the situation. Where he/she is going is unknown as I couldn't figure it out. Maybe the recipient already knows where they are going. The letter is signed **g Chapman, so the letter is from a relative most likely.

How about helping me decipher the letter? I can post sections to get closeups if need be.

Here is a page from my covers catalogue. The cancel measures 31x22, year is 1804-1834.

Why should "Esquire" denote a lawyer?

The following is the best I can do with the text. I really wish I could read the place-name beginning with P or the name in the postscript, but they've both defeated me. There are a few other places where I'm not 100% sure.

Burlington Aug 26.

D[ea]r Sir in a former letter I wrote you that I
desired you to send me some money about
this time but as I shall soon leave this place
you will not have time to get it to me here.
I am indeed in need of some cash very much
but cannot wait the receipt of any in this place.
Wherever I ... to stop, I shall write you and hope
you will have the goodness to accommodate me ...
for reasons which I will inform you at some other
time it becomes necessary for me to leave.
I am uncertain which way I shall direct
my course. I may possibly return to P...... but I am
doubtfull if .... I will write you when I get
to a halting place.
I received the cloth.... safe.
Yours Respectfully
Rob[er]t (or Rod[eric]k) J. Chapman

B. Chapman Esq-

...... to prevent any unjust suspicion
I .... state that my reasons for leaving
are chiefly the failure of Dr .........
who is about to break up house ....ing
and board out, and board...... so
excessively high in this place that
it is impossible for me to stay.

I hope that's some use.

Thank you PJR
Your skills are way above mine. I wonder what the sender needed money for?
This is one of the reasons I am interested in stampless covers, learning the content of the message.

As for Esquire being a lawyer, it's just my assumption. Could be for any other reason I suppose.

From Google "AI".....

"Esq." is a courtesy title used in the United States after a lawyer's name to indicate they are a licensed attorney who has passed the bar exam. It is used in formal written communications like legal documents and business cards, typically appended with a comma, as in "John Doe, Esq.". Using "Esq." shows professional respect, and it is traditionally considered poor etiquette for a lawyer to use it on their own behalf.

Thank you mml1942

I knew it had to do with lawyers but I didn't know the details as you listed.

Esq. is almost exclusively used by lawyers today but back in the early 1800s it just meant that the recipient was a gentleman (some type of landowner, businessman, or professional)

Thank you. In the UK, "esquire" formerly referred to as "gentleman", but is now simply a courtesy, eg on a formally addressed letter. I always used it on public correspondence at work

I'm an idiot. The place-name that I thought started with a P starts with a C, and is in fact Cornish.
