One could be a PSS 42 but the one I think is the 42 would be the one with Illinois spelled out. Most the examples of 42 I have seen only has an abbreviated state (or 4 letters). Can the 42 ID have the state spelled out. I did also notice on that stamp the Chicago is also a little more spaced out. Both of them may be L numbers but I did not see serifed type on the charts. I have a big pile of Chicago's to go through maybe something else in the pile will help ID these. Unless somebody can come up with a better ID I am going to maybe leave these as possible 42

It would be helpful to know what webpage or printed reference (title/edition)you are using to ID these precancels.

That said, Chicago precancels can be a challenge for their many types.
The fact that the font is completely different and the state line has different text wording is a dead giveaway that these must be two different types.
Additionally, note that the first stamp has "bars" while the second has "lines", which is another clue, although sometimes a bit tricky if the stamp comes from the natural end of the lines at the edge of a pane:

(Take a look at type 224.)

Thanks , I'm sort of new at this. trying to learn more about how to ID precancels. I picked up an older 5th Ed. Town & Type catalog from the PSS a while back. For Chicago there is a lot of local precancels. Eventually I will get the hang of how to properly identify There is still a bit I need to learn. I think what threw me off was the wider spaced letters of Chicago. So for the second one that should be the 42. I need to start looking at the lines and bars on the stamp to help narrow down the ID. As well as the possible styles in the catalog. Thanks for the lesson. I probably will have more questions to ask but I am learning.

The green one is not the bureau printed PSS-42, the violet one is.

That is what I figured. So sorry I should have been a little more specific.

John

I have a large amount of Chicago precancel stamps and in searching through them I came upon one of which you were talkiing about for the PSS 42.

Notice the plate block number in the corner bottom right and the end of the lines for the cancel.

Exactly! The point being to look closely at every aspect - bars/lines, text, font, spacing, punctuation, etc. Very important to read and reread the intro of any catalog.
