I only have an old Scott WW Catalog to go by, but I think I've narrowed this down to either a #74 or #95. Don't know enough to ID Type I v. Type II. Can anyone help confirm which stamp is pictured?

Thanks.

What you have is a "sage"
Once again, proper identification cannot be secured
with a poor scan.

I am just reading an article on the very stamp from a
stamp collecting lass.

Give me a few minutes and I'll scan it for you.

If you want to really inspect closely
under a magnifying glass, or loupe or microscope
(we call this 'flyspecking")
Use this to see minor differences

I love that cancel too. Help! France has so many really nice cancels.

Rod, that is great timing and great article and fly-specking info.
Thanks!

Now I just have to get some to play with.

Allow me to express a word of thanks for your help, too.

Given the detail needed on this particular stamp, I did a hi res scan that can be accessed below:

Based on what I see and what was posted previously, I believe this ia Type II ("N" under "U").

Also, this hi res image was so good I saw what looked like damage on the leg of the right image. Fortunately, it was only a spec of dirt on the plastic sleeve used for the scan so it will not detract from the stamp.

Correctamundo,
your hi res scan is too large :)
You really need something in the middle (600 dpi is about right)

Note also: Andrew I think, this is a Mouchon engraving.

Puzzler: Sage or Peace and Commerce are a dime a dozen.
you can easily get thousands of these, good postmarks
are difficult, my poison are the "numeral in ring"
christmas new year strikes, I only have 4
