Great Britain Semi-official Airmail. GWR
Britain's Great Western Railway provided airmail service between Cardiff, Wales, and Plymouth, England. In 1933, the British postmaster general authorized the Great Western Railway to use a 3d grayish-green railway airmail stamp shown, for prepayment of this service. The stamp was in use from May 15 to Sept. 30, 1933.
Great Britain's postal service stands out as one of the few long-established postal administrations never to have issued an airmail stamp. (Correct as to date of authorship, around 1980? since then airmail stamps have been issued SG2357a etc))
Of course, this is only true if one excludes local and semiofficial airmail stamps. The Sanabria World Airmail Catalogue, last published complete in 1966, countries A-M in 1972, lists no fewer than 41 semi official airmail stamps of Great Britain. Some of these stamps are also listed in the German-language Michel catalog. A 3d green and red Great Western Railway semiofficial airmail stamp, Sanabria S3, is shown.
The British postmaster general authorized the use of this stamp to prepay delivery via the Great Western Railway's airmail service between Cardiff, Wales, and Plymouth, England, starting May 15, 1933. The service was discontinued Sept. 30, 1933.
