Would anyone care to assist me in identifying this precancel both in terms of precancel type and/or what the initials "J&F" may have stood for in the perfin?
Looks like 232. Could be mistaken for a Bureau type 61, but no bureaus for Cleveland are known for this type stamp. As for the initials, I don't know. Frankie
Thanks. I may have answered my own question as it relates to the perfin, as I came up with this possible answer (Joseph & Feiss), and it fits the timeline on when this perfin would have been in use:
The precancel is the pss-209. The perfin, J177, is officially classified as 'user unknown' because no cover with corner card has been located. This is odd because the precancel and perfin is rather common, listing for only 0.15 in the Preper catalog. It is known on many denominations. Joseph and Feiss is a great guess, but as of now, unconfirmed.
Thanks. The Type 209 seems to fit much better, as it relates to the size of the letters. Interesting that the perfin hasn't been identified, especially if it's such a common type. I'll keep with Joseph & Feiss as a "definite possibility", though.
