I just received this a few days ago. The cover is rough with a #10 or #11 stamp (I think it is #10 but I'd appreciate opinions). The letter is from W T (J?) Smith to his wife Amanda. The stamp is an odd, to me anyway, combination of half scissors cut and half torn apart.

Lovely! Can you give a closer scan of just the stamp?

Great cover. The stamp is Scott #11. Looks like the cover was cancelled at Macon Ga.

My guess at the stamp is, judging by the corner decoration and the curve at the bottom of Jeffersons bust (get yer minds out of the gutter!) that this is a #11. Colour is difficult with this scan, possibly an 11c greenish blue.
Here are my Jeffersons, an 11 and two 12s.

Look at the bottom curve of the 11 on the left and see how it is steeper than the curves on the 12s. Also the corner decorations on the 11 are a little less elaborate.
The 12 also has a fine line outside the frame at the corners. Check and see if it is there on yours.
The 12 on the right is a 12c bluish green. Might be close to yours, again hard to tell on the scan.
So that's my guess 11 or 11c
thanks

Hi again. I'd also suggest you look at

This is a great site for CSA stamps, and this chart will help you determine you colour.
Good luck.

Enlarged stamp scan. Thanks everyone for the great help. And yes, it does look like it may be a Macon, GA cancel. The actual color of the envelope is less reddish and the stamp is a slightly darker blue.

jamesw, thanks for the great CSA stamp link. Now I have to find my other 2 Jeffersons to compare color. I believe I can initially focus in on this one as Dark Blue, Blue or Light Blue

This stamp is from the Archer & Daly printings produced in Richmond Va. The later printings of this stamp were made by Keatinge & Ball in Columbia SC.
