I wouldn't pay anything. It's one of those ickypoo front-of-book postage stamps.

About half a dozen major things in the office and house broke this week. I needed that one. Thanks Revenuecollector!

While it may be "flyspecking", do I judge the lower left hand corner of the stamp as having a slightly pulled perf, of which that alone would diminish the grading of a "superb" specimen?

Not a problem. I volunteer to slightly pull the other 3 corner teeth so that the stamp will have a perfect balanced appearance.

Here it is... http://www.ebay.com/itm/554-SUPERB-...em2c5ee85e27
I think its still worth about 3$ , the days of paying nutty prices for graded common stamps is near an end. The fact that is 'offered' for 295$ is like a tree falling in the forest and nobody hearing it - does it make a sound? does that 'offer' make a value?

Here's another stamp from the same ebay seller. This one is a true rarity, I'll admit. The stamp condition is great. But at nearly DOUBLE the Scott Catalog Value it still seems overpriced. On the other hand, is this really the finest known example that exists? But who has $24,550.00 to spend on a stamp anyway?

Blows my mind when people list things at outrageous prices like that and charge shipping on top of it

Being as there are so many fakes out there of this issue of coil stamp I would be concerned with the left side of the stamp that doesn't look straight and the notches in the top left corner that could be evidence of cut perfs. Seeing the stamp in person might change things, it could be damage like a dink that could be seen in real life but from a scan it looks questionable

If the catalogue price is $2.75 why does the survey start at $3?
It must more but I wouldn't pay anything for it.

I understand that the average collector would never pay these kinds of prices, but your comment is neither accurate nor fair. Nor do I think it's accurate that anyone here has 30 copies of this, or any other classic era stamp that is, or could be, PSE graded at 98 Superb. If you had high quality stamps from the classic era that could be graded as such, I'm certain you wouldn't complain if you could get this kind of $$ for them.

Malackweb is a dealer in graded, high quality stamps ... he does not sell junk. His inventory is not meant for the average collector. This does not make him a bad dealer or person. Rather than whine about the haves and have-nots, perhaps you should dust off your thesis for the justification of spending $$ on ANY collectible.

Afterall, none of us need stamps to live a good-quality life!

Rileysan...

I have spent $$$ on stamps...
I have followed malackweb on bidstart and ebay. I stand by my statement that his product is either over priced or junk (by junk I mean very defective stamps)

Chasa already let the cat out of the bag. Steve Malack is a joke and he joins the ranks of William Lang, Jerry Connoly and a host of others that list way over priced items that Don't Sell. Check his listings and see how many of these he actually sells, which is less than 3% of what he lists. Anyone who thinks he is justified in selling a Stamp for 100 times over Catalog value because they decided to use a very poorly designed grading system needs to have their head examined. I just happen to be looking for a 554 which is why I stumbled across his listing and I about spit my coffee all over my Stamp desk. I can see a piece like that fetching as high as $25-$30 but $300 ? Give me a break.
