This is a rather common stamp (Scott 220) but I was curious as to the red marking in the upper left hand corner. Is it some sort of a guide line that was printed on this issue?
Yes, Scotts book says Arrows were used in margins instead of guide lines from 1870-1894 for flat plate printing. But looks like they missed the arrow to cut on...
Thanks. I figured it had to be something along those lines. I guess many of these early issues had imperfect cuts, as this stamp (due to the showing of the arrows) is a bit taller than most other examples of the same issue.
