hi again all...it is me..a man with questions again.

this us 599 has an ear a little different from all others of the copies of this stamp that I have.
the ear has an almost enclosed group of lines on the bottom lines of the ear. [almost an enclosed area..it seems hard to explain]

this scan does show it a little but I think a better scanner could maybe show it better.

i have seen in scotts that there is an ear variety on anther us number for this stamp type..but not on the 599.

thanks for your opinions.

i do hope that all my questions do not bother or upset anyone on this site.

thanks

Hi Lonedan,

I don't have an answer for your "ear" question, but I want to let you know that I appreciate all the questions you ask. Keep asking!!

Lonedan,

I had some 599s in my surplus so I pulled them and looked at the ears. While there is some variation, likely related to inking, for the most part they seem to be similar to the image you posted.

Here is a strip of 3 - 599's for comparison

I'm using new software so until I can figure out how to zoom, this is the most detail I can provide at the moment.

There were several different Type I transfer rolls used each having 3-6 reliefs. This resulted in some minor differences in the stamps. There is a "long ear" variety on the Scott 634 (Plate 20342 Pos. UR34) that was the result of a re-touch of that plate position. This variety is not know on any other plates.
