Here's an example of a modern cover made from a map. This is obviously a novelty, but in WWII many people used old maps to make envelopes out of necessity. Does anyone (like Bobgggg or PhilB or Modern) have any?

It's a neat cover. Due to the shortage of paper in the South during the Civil War, many people used old wallpaper for envelopes. Also they used old envelopes which had been turned inside out. So in some cases you will have a stamp and address on both the outside and the inside. |

Ther was a european country during or shortly after WWII that was so desperate for paper that they printed their stamps on the back of maps. Can't remember the country but Mystic had full sheets for sale a while back. They were a little pricy for my budget though.

During WWII, the Canadian Government declared that paper was a munition, and essential to the war effort. Because it was somewhat difficult to get, people who received a letter would carefully steam it open, read the letter, then turn the envelope inside out, glue it back together and use it again.

Rod: I agree. And partly because I'm pretty sure there is no way I could take a sheet of paper and manage to "fold" and envelope out of it. |

They are fairly common if you look for them, at least the variety with FDOI for the stamp. Here is one I made back in 1981: ,_02,_pas_wrap-around_Moore_County_map.jpg) |

Max_Power: Yep, in Pinehurst, NC - opened in 1974, and owned by the corporation which owns Pinehurst Resort (Diamondhead Corp.). The PGA of America took ownership in 1986, and (I think) moved it to Florida in 1998. I'm not a Golfer (!), so these are just the facts as I recall. |

With the help (or solicitation) of cachetmaker John Andrews, the WGHF(Pinehurst) produced their first (and only) cachets for the issues: I need to re-scan some of them. Between the two issues, I have (at this time) 400 out of 589 known cachets, 56 of which are cheap add-ons not wanted. |
