After a long absence I have recently returned to stamp collection. Am using Supersafe and Dennison hinges but neither is satisfactory. Are there any other hinges out there like the ones we used to have several decades ago. The green ones, similar to glassine material? Thanks, npfw70

npfw70.. Hello and welcome to the forum.

To answer your question about hinges, no. There
are no really good ones on the market these days.

The best you can do, is to search ebay..You may be able to find
a package or two of Ideal Hinges..But you will pay
anywhere between 10-15 bucks.

I have been using Prinz stamp hinges...made in Germany.
Not as good as the ones from back then, but adequate.

They run about $2.50-3.00 per pack of 1000

Hi Npfw70,

Welcome to the SCF.

Returning to stamp collecting after a long absence, seems to be the norm.

Dear Dave and everyone,
Thanks very much for the replies. As for collecting, basically everything but sticking pretty much to material prior to the '60s or so. I am quite fond of long sets of definitives, used rather than mint. For the last 10 years or so I have been collecting meters, something I always wanted to do. But with the advent of digitized meters and ZIP codes rather than town names, they've kind of lost their appeal to me.

I've been using the Subway variety and am pleased so far. The only complaint I have is the amount of curling coming out of the package and some minor problems in application but all in all much better than others out there. I do have to admit that I've not personally used the Prinz brand.

Welcome back npfw70, as for the hinges fold o and Dennison are the leaders if they are the originals. Fold O is the original and a Canadian company is now producing Foldo. No space between the D and O. They bought up the original companies machinery and they are good for glassine cut and size like the original but they did not get the original formula for the glue. Now the original Dennison spelled on compared to the new Dennisen spelled en cost about 3 times the ones being put out now but are worth it. IMHO

wow, I didn't know there were so many kinds of hinges....I guess that is what happens when you do all your shopping for decades at the same stamp shop....I have probably been buying all these years from the same carton purchased in the mid-70's

Peg then you probably have pretty good hinges..i find most of the modern ones stick together or curl or both once the package is opened ...i look for old ones at estate sales..if I see one that says 29 cents or less as the price..they are usually pretty good !

Subway is the new Dennison. They bought the Dennison equipment and rebuilt it. So it produces the same style, shape and size hinge. Now the problem with the gum was that some of the ingredients used for the gum was no longer manufactured.

They did many experiments to find substitutes. After some tries they turned to a Germany manufacture of hinges for help with formulating a new gum.

The hinges are now made with Dennison equipment at there location in Altoona, Pa.
