Dear Tina, Hinges are a way of mounting your stamps to an album or other blank page. They are small paper rectangles, folded in half and coated with an adhesive. You affix the upper portion of the hinge to the back of your stamp and the lower portion to the album page. This allows you to lift up the stamp to look underneath and, more importantly, it keeps your stamp from becoming stuck on the page. Hinges also (supposedly) allow you to pull off your stamp (very gently) from the page if you want to do something else with it. Once the hinge is off the page you then very gently detach it from the stamp itself. You'll note that hinges will leave a mark on the back of a stamp, especially mint ones. That is why stamps for sale are noted as hinged and no hinge. That would be for mint stamps. Used stamps generally are not listed as hinged or no hinge unless very valuable. Mint no hinge stamps are generally much more valuable than those that have been hinged at one time. npfw.....
