Does this stamp have a Exposition cancel? I note that Scott calls out a higher value for an exposition machine cancel and a even higher value for a duplex cancel when stamp is on cover or card. If it is, which is it? If this is a exposition cancel does it carry a higher value if off cover or is it simply considered a typical used stamp?
Thanks in advance for any feedback,
Don

Don,

You'd want to see a copy of WILLIAM J. BOMAR'S POSTAL MARKINGS and
POSTAL HISTORY of UNITED STATES EXPOSITIONS. You could borrow this from the APRL. Bomar is generally considered, in my understanding, the leading authority wrt exposition postal history.

You stamp appears to have a partial cancel from a Barry Machine. Since the stamp is off cover, exact placement is difficult but this is probably a common cancel.

His listing reads:
Barry Machine Cancel

B01-15 – A double lined triangle within the six killer bars with the words PAN AMERICAN EXPOSITION 1901 contained inside, and a straight line dater portion. Die space to the left of the triangle will be blank or contain the number '2'. The number '1' has never been recorded.

He lists a value of $35 on cover.

Hope this helps,

Larry

Here is a full version of the cancel you have (although a different die, I think):

As ldhaber points out, this is a Barry machince cancel, covered well in the Bomar book. There are two general types of expo cancels: Those like yours which advertise the exposition, and the scarcer postmarks from the exposition postal station which is what Scott is listing values of on full cover.

So you item has a partial impression of an expo advertising cancel, which many collectors would attach a small premium to, perhaps an extra $1 in this case.
