I was at chemo yesterday and while browsing some of my singles/duplicates I ran across this violet overprint that I never noticed before. I scanned it at 1200dpi and then flipped it in picasa and cropped it out and tried to darken it so you can see it a bit better. Does anyone know why this is here? Is it just rogue postal marking or something more? Any insight would be great. Thank you very much. -Jeff

You have a stamp with a small portion of a registry cancel on it, similar to the cover here:

During the period that your stamp was current, the registry rate was 8 cents until October 31, 1908 (plus the 2 cent letter rate), and then 10 cents beginning on November 1, 1909 (again, plus the 2 cent letter rate). So your 10 cent stamp was very useful on registered letters.

Thank you John Becker.

I just located another same style magenta/purple cancel on the same stamp on ebay so must be a town registry cancel or something similar?

Yes, exactly as you found, straight-line magenta cancels are common on 8 and 10 cent stamps of that era due to the registered rates. There are similar straight-line cancels for other purposes, but less common.

Yeah that was going to be my next question but "NTVILLE" leaves too many variables to get an exact answer so I thank you for your interest in my post. One very grateful -Jeff :)
