I am new to collecting and still learning. I have this stamp that I am having difficulty identifying. I read the differences between a type I and a type III, but it isn't making sense to me. Can someone look at this stamp and help me identify it? Thanks in advance, Dave

Dave, this site will help better understand the Washington-Franklin Issues and the differences between the types. http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa...rankmain.htm

Dave, one of the first things you should try to do is offer a better scan. I think your picture was taken with a phone? It lacks contrast, and is too small to tell for sure what is going on. Oh, and welcome to this forum!

Kevin, the image has no color profile attached. Also dave1387 seems to have avocado green appliances upon which to take pictures which might be affecting your perception of color. If it was a much better image, then I could at least somewhat trust the color to be accurate.

Dave, your scan is very helpful. It could be more helpful if it showed the entire stamp. However, it is good enough to give us many clues.

KGB and Hal both present helpful websites. Read them to help yourself more in the future. For now, I'll tell you that it is a Type III and is a #450 or #488 depending on the presence of a single line watermark or not. http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa/index.htm is chock full of great information. This forum has many knowledgeable people that will gladly help you. Please ask more questions if you need more help, such as how to identify a single line watermark. P.S. Welcome to the forum!!

Kevin, this new image has a color profile (sRGB) which is pretty much standard on any computing device and will usually present as at least a somewhat accurate color. Given the new image, what is your opinion on the color?
