dittrich, in order to be a 183, the stamp must have the secret mark. I see no evidence of it in the stamp on the right. (The stamp on the left unfortunately has a dark cancel on top so one just can't tell.)

I suspect the stamp on the right is 146, but I'll welcome any disagreements.

OK...I will disagree.
Stamp on right is not BROWN...
can not be 146.

kev, I see it listed as red brown, but--as always--I hesitate to comment on colors. Have you an opinion on Dittrich's stamp(s)?

kev, but what about the missing (?) secret mark? That's what would lead me elsewhere.

Both 178 & 183 have a secret mark.
Difference is paper type.

But in both cases the secret mark is often very light. Both of these stamps are obviously vermilion.

thanks @all, but Continental or American print. Continental print had silk fibers as paper, is perhaps whiter?

left stamp is definitely #178. right stamp soft porous paper, I mine yes?

think of hard paper as less thick and more translucent, you can see through it more when you hold it up to a light

Thanks, bill; that would explain things here.

Would the one stamp being 'taller' help distinguish between the Continental printing and the American printing?
