Hi I see the back of the cover has no postmarks but the high price penciled on of $277 & the plastic its in has 'great cover' $225. Why the high value? Are these stamps worth a lot and can someone work out the year this was mailed? Thanks for the help

Here is a close up of the 6c Lincoln stamps to which there appears to be a few different types so I am hoping someone can id this pair and value them. I think the cover maybe 1871. |

I can't value the cover but the stamps are Scott #148 if they are not grilled. If they are grilled then they are #137's. A #148 off-cover is not worth much. Just guessing but I think $225 is well beyond what it would sell for on ebay in an unreserved auction. |

I also don't see anything on the cover relating to the "Azores" note at the top. If stamps had grills, would be likely that they would be called out on the sleeve.
Therefore, it is probably a previous owner reusing a plastic sleeve that was for a different cover.

To me, this would be a cover for a 6c specialist, looking for Postal History documenting the rate to England.
I don't know this stamp other than it's one of the Bureaus, and have never specialized there, but Transatlantic rate covers aren't cheap to begin with....don't know if the going rate would be in this neighborhood or not though.
But I suspect that the rate is due to the destination. Hope this helps, Ray |

covers to England are the most common and therefore the least expensive of all foreign destinations.
A cover to the Azores would be a very unusual destination and, depending upon the date, could easily be worth $225 or even $2250. However, there is nothing on this 6c cover that relates to the Azores.
Old sleeve for a different cover. |

About the word Azors ( Azores ) on a note ! where come that note ? I purchase a lot of old albums with Great Britain stamps place on Canada pages. You have to keep in mind that peoples who wrote note don't always know what they are writing about. |

Thanks for the help, a couple of folks noted that the cover may not belong to the plastic sleeve the point I made at top is, the high price is also penciled on of $277 on the back. If these are Scott #148's the value is only around $35 per stamp I believe. I just don't see a $200+ value here and there is no rate either. Maybe previous owner wrongly id the stamps as #137's? |

ray.mac, this is NOT a Bureau issue; it was produced by one of the banknote companies. |

If you zoom in on the original scan you'll note the date of 1871 ("71") on the London receiving mark.
So what we have here is a double rate cover to London as this was during the 6c or 3d per 1/2 oz rate period. Basically, as Chip said, an extremely common use and destination although the double rate makes it a tad better.
Probably a... oh I dunno.. $20 item? Certainly not $225.
A UPU-Era 19th century cover to the Azores is a $200-300 item. A treaty rate cover to the Azores? 4 figures and up. |

Here's the one cover I have to the Azores... bit of a pig but a very tough destination. 2x UPU 5c rate from 1885. |
