Thought I'd share this one....so much 3c 1851 stuff out there (and that's a great thing, btw), I thought the 1c-ers need a little attention too!

Beautiful plate flaw at the top, almost taking out the "T" in POSTAGE. The image on Doporto's site is a more complete image (this one has the bottom cut away), but this one has a much better impression..

Enjoy!
Ray

Nice raymac. But is that a plate flaw or an ink hickey/donut? You know, when a bit of schmutz gets on the plate during printing and creates white spot with a circle of ink around it.

Hi ray-mac,

It was informative, and a pleasure speaking with
you last year. Thanks again for some good advice.

Thanks from many of us that saw an earlier thread
today "Windfall", before it was shut down. You were very wise
in trying to get it back on track! It seemed to spin out of control.

No it is a plate flaw. IMHO a beautiful example of the flaw. Unfortunately due to the right side perforations a 2nd flaw at the lower right ornaments was eliminated or cut off by the perforating machine.

Sorry about the quality, not easy scanning a page from a hard cover book.

Nice one Raymac. Though I post a lot about the 3 cent and that's what has my interest at the moment, I also love the 1 cent. After all, as the old adage goes, "variety is the spice of philately". Well, it goes something like that.

Just posted this on another thread, and realized it may be applicable here.
This is a passage from a book called Production for the Graphic Designer (James Craig, Watson Guptill, 1974), and the information about paper hickies may account for this 'flaw'.

Yes, the image shows an ink hickey, but the last paragraph of the passage describes what we are seeing here.
Just throwing it out there.

Sorry, but the word "blanket" refers to the part of an offset press that transfers ink from the plate to the paper. Failure to completely clean the blanket can cause all sorts of printing anomalies.

US postage stamps from the 19th Century were intaglio printings from engraved stamp images transferred to steel flat plates. While contamination may affect one impression, the process of adding ink and wiping the plate would either remove or move foreign particles. It was necessary to dampen the paper in order to get the ink to adhere under pressure of a roller pressing the paper to the plate.
