Interesting comments made. you are correct that need better scan, including toga line is distinct. It is a deep red color, so there is a chance for it to be a 428A. I purchased it from vendor at stamp show, but it was not verified exact Scott number.I like vending stamps. Stalled..i love your stamp..Also have one with cut perfs. |

Thank you, stamp crow..as can see, my scanner doesn't show the beauty of the stamps like stallzer photo, but can see toga line distinct as well. Indeed, it would be a great rarity!

Important to note: there are many fake shermacks, so the perforations do matter to rule out if genuine including measurements. As read in another forum discussion on the topic of Shermacks. it expresses,"There is often very sharp clean cut edges, that is not indicative as genuine". The edges does not appear to be clean cut, so that is another positive note I look forward to have this stamp exam more for certification. Thank you for your responses. Appreciate it.

You may get a headache doing that,kevin...lol...I like consigning stamps in lots, especially with unused and mint stamps. It won't be just one stamp for a decision,if placed in auction in future.I never depend on just one stamp. Blazenstar. |

blazenstar - The Schermack Type III stamp in your initial post is type I 482. Scott doesn't bother with a complete list of shades for this stamp. Of the shades listed (carmine, deep carmine, carmine rose and deep rose) the stamp appears to be carmine or maybe carmine rose. More important than shade is that type Ia characteristics are lacking. Don't let the posters who are clueless or just guessing influence your choice of action. If still uncertain you can take the stamps to a stamp show and find a competent dealer who may be able to help. Regarding the scanner. Either return it for replacement if still under warranty or find better software to drive the scanner and process images. Adobe Photoshop Elements is less than $100 and some adequate freeware exists. If the scanner is old it may be necessary to try operating it with a program like VueScan to achieve proper results. To scan for Washington/Franklin types use a minimum resolution of 600 DPI. Even the worst scanners now in the marketplace should be better than that. The scans appear to have been done at a low resolution and then enlarged, a process that rarely produces acceptable results. This is a 482A: Clark |

Blazen, Hunting for rare stamps can be fun but you might want to lower your expectations some.... A type of uncommon, yet attainable, Shermacks are those with control perfins. Unlike other perfins which were used over several decades, Shermacks control perfins were only used for about 4 years. They range in price from $10 to a bit over $100. Here are some in my collection... Don |

I only surmised and inquired what blazenstar was thinking it might be. I am indeed clueless, in many ways, but I don't believe I hinted at it in this thread. |

Thank you for your comments. I am not lowering my expectations when I have had my previous rare stamps in past evaluated by experts including sold at auction house.I learned from it too. It took a few months after contract signed, and I enjoyed the interesting experience being present when sold. It was cool seeing clients with phone biddings, along with floor bidding occurring at auction. I like stamp shows too. I enjoy collecting different types stamps and not all in all in my collection are rare. I have the kind opportunity to meet the man who evaluated one of the world's rarest stamp. He never discouraged me to not find stamps, used, mint, or unused or other experts. Very informative and respectful when been in my presence.
Very interesting .I took time to meet with the experts, going threw the steps, including had positive results. I love learning about stamps which I find this forum has been beneficial with markings ect. I never inform a poster to lower their expectations, especially when not see their own private collection. For example, I have known someone bought a stamp book for 15 dollars at flea market, and had numerous rare stamps in them, because the person sold did not take time to learn or cared was in their possession. It truly does happen.
Just because my scanner is not great at my home at the moment, (lol),please don't think stamps I have cannot be considered appropriate for auction if I decide to sell with that option in my future.

If you do indeed have a 482A and sell it at auction, may I respectfully request that the first thing you do with your auction money is buy a new scanner? Because many of us here love to see hi res scans of new discoveries. |

blazenstar If your scanner is not "ancient" there is a software available online that is excellent. I had it on an old CanoScan Lide25 and was able to scan at 2400 dpi. Incredible detail. http://www.xsane.org/ |
