Is anyone aware if some of the Kans.-Nebr. overprints were also precancelled?

David....

My APS Handbook by Schoen, DeVoss & Harvey does not show or mention any precancels on this series........but that does not necessarily mean there weren't any.

I don't recall ever seeing any.

Yes, some were. But I know some were precancel and used outside of Kansas & Nebraska. I'll dig up some details.

Local precancels, but no Bureau precancels for the K-N overprints.

Ok I dusted off my 1938, "Handbook of Bureau & Local Precancels" by Adolf Gunesch.
Control stamps were distributed in the spring of 1929. Many local PO/cities
precancel only at Christmas time. In Kansas 50 towns issued precancels with controls resulting in 175 varities. In Nebraska 67 towns, the number of varieties was not mentioned. All should be considered rare and worth more
then standard control issues. In what I've seen of these types of precancels
I believe the Hastings, NE would be the most common. I do not personally own any.
More details as I can retrieve it.

Hey, SCF just hiccuped! And now I see that when I add an image, it immediately puts it in the right encoding without having to do that cut and paste thingie with the URL. Was that a software upgrade that just happened?

Two examples of local precancels of the Nebraska overprint:

Note the Nebraska precancel. Out of state precancels and usage exist, but were not authorized and the out of state usage illegal.

For any of the K-N precancels, of course you want to make sure the K-N overprints are genuine.

Some stamps with Nebraska were used by Robert Hayes of Toledo to frank mail from
Federalsburg, MD, then home APS. The precancel is silent, just a printed line at about a 5% angle, higher on right side of stamp and was .5mm wide only on the Franklin .01.

I could create a list of all K/N controls that are precancel.

By the way, David Giles, What made you ask the question in the first place?

Still wondering why you asked?

Mike:

The reason I asked is I was looking at a U.S. collection and it had a Nebr. overprint, pre-cancelled. I'd never seen one before, and did not know if pre-cancelling was performed on the Kans. - Nebr. overprints.

I was just wondering what struck your curiosity. I've enjoyed going through
album/collections and then come across something I was previously unware of.
That's Fun!
