I lost out on this item on ebay. Thoughts and comments? I'm deliberately withholding the description and the final price.

I do not know a thing about these, but I like this one. I realize it has problems on the bottom, but I love the color and the margins on top and the right! Too bad you did not get it, I think it is a beauty!

I tend to prefer used to unused because it feels more like part of the "philatelic story" to me. Even with the problems at bottom, I like it. Sadly, I was not the one who beat you in the auction, but I'd love to add it to my collection (and to my non-expert eyes, it looks legitimately like a #8).

Also, what's going on with the bottom border of the stamp above it? Is that a massive double transfer?

Yes, it is #8 and was correctly described as such. What was not in the description, but which at least a couple of us recognized, was that this is position 99R2, often described as "the finest" example of #8. It is certainly the most celebrated variety. lukusw: you are correct, at top you can see part of the big double transfer on position 89R2, described by Neinken as "the most pronounced double transfer, or re-entry, on any U.S. stamp (general issues) known from 1847 to date." So this stamp packs a big two-for-one wallop. Final price: $665.

Wow! I wasn't even aware of that one. The buyer is a 1c collector that is pretty tough to beat, I have noticed.
