I'm up for the editorship of a international philatelic organizations magazine. It is not official and I've not agreed to anything at this time. Issues with programing and computer requirement need to be sorted out. So at this time I do not wish the group at this point since members monitor this site until it is a done deal.
What I'd like to hear is any thoughts and ideas anyone my have as to what you'd like to see in a Philatelic Magazine? Of course it will be limited to the scope of the group, but there will be generalized common ideas that would work over any area of stamp collecting.
I will respond to all comments pro or con, since that's what I'll need to do in the Editor position.
Thanks in Advance for any input you can offer.
Mike

I'm a freelance writer and I have been editor for a large numismatic association's magazine, so I know the challenges and the rewards (both can be great!). Best of luck to you! |

I would love to see "human interest" stories about the average stamp collector..the collector himself could do a little writeup about his collecting interests and if it meets approval it could be published ..theres enough written about the fantastic sums a very rare stamp sells for in the major stamp publications..i am small time and I like it like that !! |

Ditto Phil!
I would love to see more along the lines of "Hurst's Outbursts" and the early dealers/collectors, stamp mysteries and crime, forgeries, the stories behind the stamps, etc. |

I agree with Phil and Greg we need more stories and focus on the average collector. After all that is the bread and butter of the hobby |

I would like to see stories about the history of a stamp and it's design... why it was printed, etc. I'm also interested in hearing about what people thought about it, in it's day.
For example, the 18˘ Alcoholism stamp issued by the United States was not well received, because many people thought that if they used the stamp on a personal letter, the recipient would think that they were telling them they had a drinking problem.
Do you think people fifty years from now will know about the current controversy over The Simpson's stamps?
As well, I'd like to see more stories about more modern (ie. post-1960) stamps. The classics are nice, but who can afford them?

Quote: bringing new people into the hobby YES! Now that would be a magic trick, wouldn't it. I agree it would be very a worthwhile topic. I guess an underlying questions is the target market of the publication.... for experts, established collectors, new collectors, etc. Not to even mention all the various areas under the umbrella of philately. It would be tough for any single publication to hit every facet of our hobby. Mike, keep us updated. |

Good luck in your endevours warehouse. At a recent stamp club meeting we had a presentation on Hurst. It was quite interesting. This winter I am planning on reading more about him and his impact on stamp collecting in the maritimes. Dianne |
